September is here, and with it comes a brand-new card sketch! I have to say, I was especially thankful for the sketch this past weekend. After finishing my first week back at school, I was completely worn out—there really is no tired like that first-week-of-school tired. Still, I wanted to create, but I needed something simple that didn’t require too much brain power.
This month’s sketch was just right. It’s an incredibly simple layout, perfect for showcasing a small print patterned paper. For my first card, I reached for the Fruit Salad Designer Series Paper, which is currently on the Last Chance List. I just love its fun, cheerful vibe!

To finish the card, I stamped and heat-embossed the sentiment in white. The sentiment is from the Pattern of Friendship stamp set—also on the Last Chance List. I paired it with Daffodil Delight cardstock and a Real Red card base, which really made the colors pop.
For my second card, I kept the same layout and used the same Pattern of Friendship stamp set for the sentiment. This time, I chose the now-retired Terrific Toadstool Designer Series Paper. I love how the playful design stands out against the darker background.

To finish the look, I mounted the DSP on Basic Black cardstock and used a Berry Burst card base, which I embossed with a retired embossing folder for a touch of texture. The combination of rich color and subtle dimension gives this card a completely different feel while still following the same simple sketch.
That’s one of the things I enjoy most about sketches—you can use the exact same layout, but by switching up the paper, colors, or textures, you end up with cards that look totally unique!
If you try this month’s sketch, I’d love to see what you create. Share your version with me—I think you’ll be surprised by how versatile and fun this simple layout can be!
